Why we care:
Australia is one of the world’s most prosperous and stable countries.
It is our obligation under the United Nations Refugee Convention to show compassion to those fleeing war, turmoil and persecution in their homelands. Our country has gained much from the contribution of those who have arrived since World War II and opportunities for further enrichment lie before us.
Australia’s current offshore detention policy is cruel and inhumane. It is also expensive, costing billions of dollars per year more than onshore options. The need to discourage dangerous sea voyages does not justify Australia’s current policy.
We Support:
- Ending offshore processing, and streamlining refugee applications
- Increasing Australia’s intake of refugees to better reflect our capacity
- Funding for settlement, language, and community integration programs
- Ending temporary protection visas, with a return to permanent protection visas
- Cooperating with regional neighbours to deter people smuggling and provide alternatives to risky sea voyages.
